Nursery Tap Hip to Toe DVD Series - Writer/Producer/Director/Choreographer

The Nursery Tap Hip to Toe Children’s DVD/CD series percolated in my head for a couple of years before I had the window of opportunity, time, and location to make them manifest. The idea was to update traditional English and international nursery rhymes and set them to dance in a theatrical way. The process was a joyful, childlike experience; jumping into the creative sandbox and collaborating with incredibly game and imaginative teens.

The most creative DVDs do not follow a formula; they set a path, offering viewers a fresh approach and an opportunity to learn in a new way. In Nursery Tap Hip to Toe Volume Two, the deceptively minimal sets amplify the highly inventive costumes. By not showing the dancers’ faces young viewer are free to focus on the dance, the rhythm and the words of the nursery rhymes. The camera, which appears to sit in an orchestra seat, directs eyes and ears to a fresh observation point.
— Clair Green, President, Parents' Choice Foundation, "Take Note"
An exquisitely imagined concept, this production pairs the timeless magic of nursery rhymes with the rich artistry of dance. More than two-dozen nursery rhymes, ranging over a cultural map from Europe to Asia, are accompanied by dances that bring the little ditties to life. . . Like a night for ballet at the classical theatre, an afternoon for painting at a museum, and a morning with a book in an easy chair, this is a DVD from which to learn and treasure.

Viewers will be mesmerized . . . Each rhyme unfolds into a multisensory delight . . . An emotive, impeccably paced voice-over recitation of the rhyme, along with musical and vocal sound effects, creative dramatics, and simple props, communicates each rhyme’s meaning and unique rhythmic pattern. This engaging presentation is sure to pull kids onto their feet to replicate the simple dance steps.

“A captivating approach to rhythm and rhyme . . . expressive and witty.
— Lynn Heffley, L.A. Times
Nursery Tap is an excellent way to while away a rainy spell with your toddler or preschool-age child. Unlike many other DVD’s aimed at the younger set, this one bears repeat viewings.
— Jessica Lane, Northwest Baby & Child
Expertly produced and superbly performed, Nursery Tap Hip to Toe Volume Two is enthusiastically recommended for preschool, kindergarten, family, and community library DVD collections.
— Midwest Book Review
Nursery Tap Hip to Toe is a delightful collection of children’s nursery rhymes which is far apart from the ordinary . . . The Nursery Tap DV has won the 2005 George Foster Peabody Award, which comes as no surprise. Graceful and imaginative costumes, creative sets and great choreography set this children’s nursery rhymes DVD way above the rest. Nursery Tap Hip to Toe comes highly recommended. Your children will enjoy watching this DVD and learning the nursery rhymes and will love to dance along as they do so!

Nursery Tap Hip to Toe, Vol. 2 will likely follow its award-winning Volume One into the heart of dance-loving kids all over. And this volume’s multicultural twist makes dancing and listening more of an international treat . . . Like it’s predecessor, this DVD illustrates nursery rhymes by using tap, ballet, hip-hop, and modern dance. Highly recommended . . . Especially for those children 2-10 who like to dance or who need to understand how to use body language and their bodies.
— Carole McDonnell, Preschool Entertainment
For anyone who thought Mother Goose could never be cool comes a new release that debunks that myth. The second title in the series, Nursery Tap Hip to Toe, Volume 2 . . . this release jams enough entertainment into one viewing that little ones won’t be sitting for very long.

To get your little ones off the couch this summer, consider trying out these two innovative DVDs. Volume One captivated my kids’ attention right away, with my 6-year olds trying to copy the dance steps, and the toddler bopping along to the rhymes. Volume Two, which also feature just costumed legs and feet, surprised us all with how much emotion and storytelling can be expressed by the lower extremities.

PreS-Gr3 - The second installment in this series is every bit as wonderful as its award-winning predecessor. Created and co-choreographed by Juleen Murray Shaw, this performing arts video introduces children to tap and ballet dance, while entertaining them with Mother Goose themed theatrical backdrops and classic nursery rhymes. . . expect this title to be requested quite often.
— School Library Journal/Phylis Levy Mandell, Ed.
How refreshingly unusual . . . This unique DVD is just right for families looking for something different and educational for their little ones. The combination of rhymes and rhythms is excellent for stimulating young children’s language skills. It’s an artistic production that delivers an experience that is different, refreshing, and valuable.
